My last hospital stay ~3 years ago drove that point home when as one of the conditions for my release was to have an unassisted bowel movement. I had them start bringing me stool softener and fruit juices. When the time came, I was surprised at how much effort it took to pinch off a 5-pound brown trout floater (possibly not an exaggeration. It was the first ime in my life I was ever siezed by the impulse to go find witnesses to my efforts, but instead I just called the nurse so she could write it down in her log (pun welcome, but not intended). I like the ones that I've held on to a bit too long, so they're really compact and a little hard to get out, but are easy to clean up after. Yep, constipation and the most annoying part was that it was pressing against my bladder, so for about eight hours, I felt like I needed to pee. I finally got some releif around 3am last night and I did look up the average length of a large intestine. I also weigh 10 pounds less today than I did yesterday. Staying off of it is a help but when you have to be lecturing or in lab, you gotta be on your feet. (When lecturing I tend to pace like a caged leopard, which makes it worse, of course.) I can take ibuprofen, but the stronger antiinflammatories (naproxen in particular) give me a stomach ulcer almost immediately. Icing the foot it is not an option at the office, either.
