lemming
Re: The cranky thread Today just sucked. I have to keep remembering there are good people out there and I work with a bunch of them. Just there are some real people out there. And I dealt with a broad range of them today. And what was my worst, having to tell someone that the cat that they fell in love with while visiting in November is dying and probably only has a short time left and wouldn't survive the trip to Atlanta. Cancer
Re: The cranky thread Well, I wonder which of my daughter's schoolmates' parents has the compromised machine at home? This morning I started getting numbers of email bounce messages from places all over the world, generally a sign that my address has been harvested by some 'bot somewhere and is being used as spoof fodder. The only alteration in email "habits" I've had of late is getting spam intended for the 'rents of the kids in the school play. That's the 2nd-most-likely sort of place where a recipient is likely to have a compromised machine; the most likely being a machine habitually used by a retiree. Old Man
Re: The cranky thread The especially annoying thing about that is that once an email address gets harvested, it's out there forever. I've been receiving spam on one account since 1994--serves me right for posting to rec.games.frp.

AmadanNaBriona
Re: The cranky thread The latest... My job (not the leather working, the theater) is being investigated by the police for...... something. They won't say what, but they suspended all the upper management. One of said upper management, whom I've known and admired since I was 8, died last Friday from complications relating to his stomach cancer. I strongly suspect that the stress of the investigation was a contributing factor. Another of my role models, from ren faire, passed on about a week ago. At faire I played his great-nephew. He was a vet who was at the Battle of Chosin Reservoir as a Marine Corps medic. I was looking at a graphic of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and realized that my "needs" look like a game of Jenga just before everything collapses. [/quote'] I've often said that the proper punishment for writing/knowingly distributing a virus should be to have your hands cut off. I'd extend that out to all malware, of which spyware is a subcategory.
AliceTheOwl
Re: The cranky thread Seems appropriate to me. I've been trying to clear some malware out of my work computer for the last week. I have no idea where it came from, but it's piggybacking off Internet Explorer, which Windows refuses to fully delete so I can isolate the sucker. So instead, I'm doing constant scans to see if it's come back. It somehow resurfaced over the weekend, even though my computer was off all that time. Arrrgh. I've had a fair amount of luck with a combination of Spybot Search & Destroy for scanning and SpywareBlaster for preventative.
AliceTheOwl
Re: The cranky thread AVG Anti-Spyware, which was recommended by a friend and has cleaned up quite a bit. The trouble seems to be that it comes back, which is why I'm also running ComboFix.exe and OiUninstaller (OI being a pernicious malware program that doesn't just go away by uninstalling). And I have Symantec Realtime Protection, and Symantec scans once a day. It's quarantined a LOT, but seems at a loss as to how to remove the malware entirely. Cancer
Re: The cranky thread My first encounter with spyware was on something I bought in a standard shopping mall store. eGames for a while sold their games bundled with the infamous TSADBOT malware, which back in the day was very difficult to remove. Since then they've put the removal tool on their website, but I never, ever again will allow anything of theirs onto my hard drive. The same is true of Mattel (which bought Broderbund and sold their junk): for a while their stuff had a chunk of malware on it so bloated it brought one machine to its knees immediately, and I'll never buy any software from them, either. SatinKitty
Re: The cranky thread One of my toilets is broken and they need to disassemble and remove my metal shelf set that is around the toilet to fix it. The tool needed to do so is in my Storage Space for which only OddHat knows where the keys are and he isn't here. The Maint. Man said he had such tools at home and would bring them tomorrow, remove the shelves and fix it. Meanwhile, thank God we have two toilets ! teh bunneh
Re: The cranky thread I'm posting this here because (a) I don't want to derail the other thread, and ( I don't want to threadcrap. I used to write TOs (Technical Orders) for the US Airforce, for one of their most advanced weapons systems. A TO is basically a user manual, covering both hardware and software, and including "hot" remove-and-replace procedures. As most of you know, I'm a technical writer. Been doing it for nearly 12 years now. My specialty is software, but I'm fully qualified to write for nearly anything. I've done medical hardware, software for end users, software for technical people, and, as mentioned above, military equipment. I'm pretty damned good at what I do. Most technical manuals are written with the assumption that the reader has at least a 10th grade education. Your local newspaper is written to an 8th grade level. I'm telling you this to establish some benchmarks. Airforce TOs are written to a 6th grade reading level. The TOs I was writing were intended for some of the most highly-trained and highly-skilled specialists in the military, and I was not allowed to use words with more than two syllables. And that's not all. No, there's also the Warnings. Every time there is something to do with, say, electricity, you must include a warning. "Warning: Electricity can be harmful or fatal. Use caution!" Not just once, at the beginning of the manual, but each. and. every. time. it. comes. up. And if you think that's bad, that's not even the worst of them. There's also warnings for attaching a lightning rod -- "Warning: Lightning rod is sharp. If it falls off, it might impale someone standing directly beneath you. Do not stand directly beneath lightning rod while it's being installed." Not just once, but for each and every step. Remember, these are instructions written for highly-trained, technical people. The best and the brightest. And now, you're trying to tell me that an eighteen year old kid straight out of Basic has a 12 INT??? Yeah, you know what? No. You're wrong. You're so wrong it's not even funny. It's sad how wrong you are. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. I guess I should actually be happy. If Johnny Grunt has a 12 INT, I feel pretty comfortable setting my own INT somewhere in the mid-high 20s.
AliceTheOwl
Re: The cranky thread The reading level of a newspaper varies greatly. My friend the journalist writes for a fourth grade level, there in the capital region of NY. She's always delighted when she slips a big word (or even better, and ADVERB!) into her articles.
