Yeah, I'd lend the kid a book.

 

I'm up half-a-dozen times now when I've had students' calculators die during exams (including one last week). Lending them mine is not really an option, since I use a RPN machine that students can't figure out how to use. I have started keeping a pack of AAA's in my exam kit for this purpose.

Fortunately I have a classroom set of calculators.  Most of them are solar-powered $15 scientific calculators that don't require replacement batteries.  But I also have a bunch of TI-84 Plus models that go through AAA batteries faster than the TV remote during a Twilight marathon.
