Pariah
Plotting a graph is mostly helpful. Plotting curves is considered to be Too Much Work these days. Just what I said. I ask students to plot graphs, and it is as if I had asked them to change one of the inner tires on a loaded tractor-trailer rig. In principle they know what needs to be done, but they seem to have done very little of it, and it is obviously a major imposition on my part to ask for it. I blame graphing calculators and an excessive dependence on Excel. It's sad, but in a way I'm kind of glad it's not just me who's seeing this. Last week I had my students perform the same simple experiment at three different temperatures (ice water, room temperature, near-boiling) and time the reaction to see how long it took. Then I asked them to plot those three--three!--data points and draw a rough curve, then use that curve to predict how long the reaction would take at 50ºC. Less than a quarter of them proved able to do that successfully. These weren't my Honors students, but still. That's pathetic. /gripe
