Bazza
Sadly, I find most of Mel Brooks' stuff to be inane to the point of unwatchability. I sort of agree, as to use Blazing Saddles as an example, he spoofed the western. There is not much if any plot, and can be seen as a precursor to a lot f the spoof films today -- which is sort of like a new "genre" -- Hollywood keeps making them, why? *sigh* The only gag I did find funny was the toll booth. I also have a similar reaction to Life of Brian. I found that mostly pointless, with only the last part to make some sort of sense, and sis like the closing song to be a good bit of black humour. The rest was mostly unwatchable. I also recently watched RED and did find this as a "spoof" funny as the humour made sense along with the plot of the film. it is like if Die Hard had more humour in it, i.e. an action comedy. Plus, Helen Mirren with guns. Pariah
L. Marcus
Life Of Brian was, to a substantial part, a comment on the state of the political left in Britain during the run-up to Thatcher's rule. "Brothers! Brothers! We should be struggling together!" "We are!" "We mustn't fight each other! Surely we should be united against the common enemy!" "THE JUDEAN PEOPLE'S FRONT?!" "No no, the Romans!"

L. Marcus
And Gulliver's Travels was also a social comment. But such, if you are not aware of the subtext, it loses its meaning, right? Absurdist humor don't need meaning. And anyway, political commentary is but one meaning among several.
