I recall a survey of kids in the young-teens age range back in the early 1970s (I was in that demographic at the time) indicating a true majority of that age group held that belief about dishwashing in particular. The student was limping along with a plausible skirting-the-edge sort of answer, and then the closing sentence dove into fractal wrongness. No idea where that idea came from.
