Cancer
I have no real opinion about the EU, except for the pang of nostalgia that swept over me when I realized (rather after the fact) that the adoption of the euro meant the Deutschmarks I had used when I was a kid living in Germany were gone. Cancer
Except for the milled edges, it was hard to tell a 5-mark piece from a US half-dollar in the pocket. Similar size and weight.
L. Marcus
Why have both?
Cancer
At the time (all before mid-1971), conversion of currency and coin was rather more difficult to do. Especially for young'uns, which I was at the time. The 5-mark piece was worth more, by at least a factor of 2.5. It was during that time that the old original 4 DM <--> $US1 locked-in exchange rate was relaxed, but we left Germany before it had drifted any further than 3.60<-->1, IIRC. L. Marcus
I can't remember the exchange rates at the Euros introduction.
