Re: Longest Running Thread EVER

Sort of. There's no real metaphysical attempt to channel the spirit of the thing, which is what I usually associate "totem" with. It's more like gang sign for not-generally-recognized-as-criminal institutions.

If I ran a school, and felt that the mascot was supposed to be the spirit the school "channelled" into it's endeavors... I'd choose a banana.

What was the reasoning behind the slug, then?

I went there. There wasn't a mascot at all until the 80s. Early 80s there was talk about having a mascot since they want the school to be more like others. (Get the fraternities, have a sports team other than Ultimate Frisbee) and since it was the admin pushing it, The Banana Slug was chosen by the students. I think it was decided to be the Sea Lion, but after a near 100% NO from the students, it went to the Slug.

... What's up with fraternities and sororities again?

To setup social circles that can call other social circles losers? Not really sure myself, I avoided all that. I went to UCSC because they didn't have them.

In other news, I had my Bilateral arthroscopic debridement for my knees. Stuff has been smoothed and junk has been removed.

Re: Longest Running Thread EVER

Something I am considering putting on Monday's Math Meth exam:

The observable Universe contains an estimated 10^23 stars in 8*10^10 galaxies.

How many different ways are there to partition 10^23 stars into 8 * 10^10 galaxies?

Obviously this is just C(10^23, 8*10^10). I want a numerical estimate, order of magnitude, of that number.

Not that it'd help, but calculators are not permitted on the exam.
