evil.spartan1176
I'm making a character for a friend who is new to the game. He wants his character to have a power where he swings his sword as he is sent forward a distance, hitting anything in that line. I was wondering if anyone knew how I could make this power as easily as possible for him. Thank y'all!
Grailknight
There are several ways to build this: 1- Use the Move-By or Passing Strike maneuvers and attack multiple targets. This has the drawback of taking -2 OCV per successive target but gets a damage bonus from movement velocity. 2-Buy an Area of Effect attack with the SFX of swinging a sword while moving past the targets. Use Area of Effect Line or Hexes(connected but not necessarily straight) with a Combined Movement power. 3- Buy an HKA and add the Advantages to make an Offensive Damage Shield with a One Hex Area of Effect. You can attack everyone who is adjacent to you that Phase, whether you move to them, or they move to attack you. You'll be subject to the -2 OCV per target on those you move against just like the first option but not on those attacking you or moving through the hex you occupy. Hope this helps and I'm sure that others will add more options. evil.spartan1176
steriaca
You could also make it an Area Of Effect Line attack (depending on how you build it, Blast or Killing Attack - Range), and a linked Teleportation power (must pass through adjacent spaces, only to the end point of the linked attack) to simulate the attack. Add Accurate to the line (so he only slashes who he wants to slash) and you should be good. But it is probably easier to use Move By rules instead. Hugh Neilson
One advantage to the Move By rules - "well, you don't need a special build because Hero already has that flexibility built in!" There are drawbacks to Move Bythough. A Multiple Attack takes a full phase (maybe not a big deal as he'll be moving and attacking anyway) with a -2 OCV penalty per target and halved DCV penalty. That's after the base -2 OCV and DCV for Move By. The first miss ends the sequence (with END spent for each attack). Of course, skill levels with Move By can offset some of these issues. A Selective Area Effect - Line or "any area" is a good option. This could be purchased as a Naked Advantage on the DCs his sword will normally do, Linked to using a half move to run. Assuming he has 32m or less Running, he can take Any Area (up to 8 - 2 meter radius areas), Selective (+1 Advantage). A Limitation for tying the Advantage to his movement is appropriate - he can't have the area go across a chasm, or hit someone past a fire without moving through it himself. -1/2 seems reasonable. So if his sword can hit 9 DC (3d6 KA), this costs 45 (just the advantage cost itself)/1.5 = 30 points. He can take a swing at normal OCV at every target he moves past in a half move of up to 16 meters. If he wants to hit everyone in the line automatically, don't add the +1/4 advantage for Selective. Technically he moves, then attacks, but practically since he has to move and only hits those in his movement line, there's no huge advantage to combining the move and the attacks. LoneWolf
If this is for a heroic game I would probably go with a passing strike. Move By has penalties to OCV and DCV and your STR is cut in half for damage. You can also damage or break your weapon when doing a move by with a weapon. Passing strike gives a bonus to your OCV, you get your full STR to increase the damage and you never damage or break the weapon. Both ways get a bonus to damage of v/10. In a champions game you have to buy your weapons. So, what I would do would be to buy a multipower for the sword and buy slots for the different things you can do with the sword. Use a slot for a HKA with the advantage area of effect line selective.
Christopher R Taylor
You can get around the limitations of a multiple move by if you buy extra STR and CV to offset the reductions, but when I have built something like this (usually for a speedster) I've done the line effect with triggered teleport (must cross intervening space) combo Steriaca suggests.
