Ben O'Conner wins stage 6 of the Vuelta. Like Victor Campenaerts in the Tour, Ben is leaving his current team for a new one at the end of the year and also pulls out a stage win becoming the latest to win a stage at all three Grand Tours. But this one was so emphatic that O'Conner is now in the overall lead by close to five minutes. This should not have been allowed to happen as O'Connor is a genuine threat and a team leader.

Roglic may be playing a long game.  Ceding the leader's jersey may force O'Conner's team to try to defend it...can they do that for 2 weeks?

I'll grant that the margin's larger than I can recall from the TdF, and it *could* be Roglic isn't in in top form, of course, and/or teams made mistakes.  But going back to TdFs before...I wanna say Ineos...started dominating...first-week leads weren't necessarily desirable.

Van Aert wins Stage 7 of the Vuelta

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cycling/articles/c1l589rle7go

All the teams made mistakes in not reeling back the breakaway the previous day. Vingegaard would not have allowed Pogacar to do that and vice versa in other Grand Tours. O'Connor had nothing to lose and went for it. Otherwise yes first week leads may not be desireable.

Little League Baseball international championship game.  Taiwan grabs a 1-0 lead early, and holds on all the way to the 6th...when Florida scores on a play at the plate that's just not quite good enough to get the runner.....with 2 outs, at that.

Game goes into extras.  Neither team scores in the 7th.  In the 8th, the rules dictate the placed runner at 2nd...Little League absolutely doesn't want to strain the pitchers.  Taiwan doesn't score.  Florida comes up...runner on 1st, none out.  It's their #12 hitter...fairly recent rule is, the batting order is circular, and ALL the kids on the team have a slot in the order.  So the Florida manager orders a bunt...which Taiwan didn't do.  The kid drops an absolute beauty down...hugs the edge of the grass down the first base line, with near-perfect pace.  Uh...oh...this absolutely has the kid making third.....and ooohhhhhh noooooooo.......the first baseman went for the ball too.

Yeah...there's no one at first.

Believe the pitcher tried to get the out...with no one there................................

Ball does down the line, the kid on second had been running..............................game over.

Florida wins the international championship.  Best "what I did on my summer vacation" essay topic, EVER.

Obviously not a player of the status of Nadal or Murray, but Diego Schwarzmann had an *excellent* career, hanging around in or near the top 10 for many years.  He was 15th as late as the summer of 22.  He's only 32...but he's been on tour for 14 years.  So, it's not surprising he's basically emptied the tank, and it's shown;  his ranking plummeted from ~30th in Jan/early Feb 2023 to 100th in July, and steadily dropped since.  Below 200 after Wimbledon.

He announced his retirement after the US Open.  Good for him...he won the 3 rounds of qualifying to get into the main field, but then lost in 4 sets to Gael Monfils just now.

Meanwhile, #15 Holger Rune lost the first set, then got down 3-1 in the second.  Had Brandon Nakashima 15-40...couldn't break.  Got to 5-1...Rune up love-40...couldn't break.  So Nakashima's got the first 2 sets.  Let's start the upsets early!!!

EDIT:  in preliminary talks before the evening matches...James Blake mentioned that Dominic Thiem is also retiring...after Vienna, in October.  He's only 30.  In his case, the root cause was a right wrist injury in '21.  For a right handed tennis player, this is clearly a crucial problem...it's central to playing, and it's never come back fully.

Don't know how many follow the NWSL, but their new CBA pretty much has an unprecedented free agency bent:

Abolishes the Draft

Unlimited Free Agency

Cannot be traded without players permission

Guaranteed Contracts

FWICT no salary cap/luxury tax

Revenue sharing across league

I realize this is extreme, and probably won't be duplicated, but makes me wonder if we won't see other sports, the MLB Union, specifically, fight more for something closer.

MIGHT see something like this in the WNBA, but IMO no chance in MLB, NBA, or NFL.  For one thing, the economic scale is entirely different...the minimum salary in the NWSL is basically $50K, rising to $80K in 2030.  In MLB, the rookie minimum is $740K...so someone called up and on the roster for a dozen games makes about $50K from that period alone.  NWSL salary cap is $2.75M, but that might be before the new agreement.  Still...estimate it at, say, $3.5M...for the entire roster.  Most MLB teams have 1 or 2 individual players making 10x, or more, I suspect.

Secondary aspect...in MLB, the top players have almost-equal billing with the team they're on.  In rare cases, arguably, it's higher billing...Judge, say.

Caitlin Clark sets the WNBA rookie record for 3 pointers in a season.  The previous record was set in a 34 game season;  she broke it in her 31st.  She'll set a new mark that's massively higher...because the season's now 40 games...but skip the asterisk.

2 massive early upsets now at the US Open.  Alcaraz lost in the 2nd round;  Djokovic lost yesterday in the 3rd round.  That's the 2nd and 3rd seeds, and coming in, the #2 and 3 ranked players...Alcaraz stayed #3, but Djokovic dropped to 4th.  Medvedev will probably pass him, and Rublev might also.

And Djokovic may need some extended time off.  It's worth noting that Alcaraz and Djokovic were the Olympic finalists.  Alcaraz lost his first match in Cincy, his only hard-court event before the Open.  Djokovic didn't play any.  Djokovic apparently wasn't moving well, and his service motion was way off;  he had knee surgery not long before the Olympics.  That makes me wonder that perhaps he *shouldn't* have played the Olympics per se, but he achieved his goal.  He has nothing left to prove on the court, so, well, if his chance now for another slam's gone...it was probably worth it.
