It's even organized on the same lines. Olympic tennis is no better in terms of being unneeded. It's a 64 player draw...with automatic entry for the top 56 who want to play, but subject to a 4 maximum limit per country.

For the fifth Olympics in succession https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/olympics/articles/cvg4403mm38o To amplify on this. That's the first time it has ever happened. In ANY sport. He's 42...during the match, they were saying he'd basically not competed since Tokyo. So...at the end of the match, he completed a little ritual unique to wrestling. He accepted the applause of the crowd...then unlaced and took off his wresting boots, and left them on the mat. That's wrestling's version of dropping the mic. And somewhat ironic? The man he beat wrestled for Chile...after defecting from Cuba because he wanted to wrestle in the Olympics. Countries only get to send 1 wrestler....and let's face it, the multiple gold medal winner has that locked up if he wants it. So likely a very bittersweet moment all the way around. unclevlad
Noah Lyles can't pull off the 100-200 double...takes the bronze but is FAR back. That's not the bad news. Once the race is over, he sits down, and ultimately is helped to the medical center, with obvious breathing distress. Just reported: diagnosed with Covid 2 days ago. Still chose to try...but very obviously was not at full strength. Particularly as the commentators are noting, he's got a long history of asthma, which can't make Covid any easier. Open question now whether he can anchor the 4x100 relay.

unclevlad
US men's basketball team get a REAL scare from Serbia. Serbs moved the ball well, shot lights out, US played a little disjointed...even as late as the 3rd quarter. Serbia was up 13 entering the 4th, but US ramped up the defense to 12. James, Curry, Durant and Embiid all take it up notches. Serbia kinda messes up late...around 30 seconds, they let Steph get the ball and dribble, and don't foul until the 8 second mark. US was up 2. With Curry shooting FTs. Yeah, we know what that means. Serbia can't hit a 3 in the waning seconds, clock runs out. USA by 4. Onto the gold medal game. The story notes Quote Since 1995, the U.S. has suffered 11 baton errors resulting in disqualifications or bans, including most recently at the 2022 World Championships. Have to admit, that sure sounds like a training issue. EDIT: oh, and saw something you almost NEVER see. Men's 10m platform diving, the qualifying round. A Chinese diver is setting up for a handstand dive...see it all the time. Only he botched the stand...and tumbled backwards...fortunately. It's called a balk, and it's a flat 2 point deduction. The good news is...if you fall forward, it'd count as a dive, and well, you'll get 0's. PLUS...off a 10m board, I *believe* I've seen an instance where the diver fell forward, and didn't gain much control. Forget 0 scores...that's bloody dangerous. The diver's other efforts were rock solid, and he qualified for the final easily. The scores reset.

Two of those golds came in one night which had not been done this century and certainly not by Mr Phelps. Tom Daley of Great Britain came out of retirement and won a silver medal in diving but has now announced his retirement. Tom Pidcock came back from Covid forcing him out of the Tour de France to retain his cycling gold that he won in Tokyo. The Muffin man went viral at the games. As did a swimmer who had retrieved a swimming cap. Andy Murray ended his tennis career in the third round of the doubles but stayed around to give encouragement to other GB competitors. Djokovic finally won the Olympic gold medal at tennis which Nadal had done but not Federer. The calm Turkish guy who was in the mixed shooting event and went viral came away with a silver medal. Gold in LA is his goal. The British heptathlete Katarina Johnson Thompson finally got to win a medal at an Olympic after 4 tries in a row.
