WOWWWWwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

if you're not watching the Stanley Cup finals????

SHOCKER.

Edmonton scores first, on a *short handed* goal.  They've scored twice, short handed...and allowed 1 goal.

Then they score on a power play.  2-0.

THEN, a couple minutes later?  They score AGAIN, by being the more physical.

3-0 after 25 minutes, and the Panthers are totally shell-shocked.  In about 5 periods, it's been, I believe, 13-1 for the Oilers.  If this heads back north, the pressure totally shifts.

EDIT:  CRAZY game.  Scoring flurry in the second...Oilers hold onto a 4-3 lead for most of the 3rd.  Panthers are forced to pull the goalie with 2 minutes left...but Oilers get a shot at the net.  GREAT!!! effort to knock it away just before the puck crosses the goal line...only to have McDavid be there to pick up the loose puck and smack it home.

5-3 Oilers.  Friday gonna be bonkers.

Mannnnnnnn...........

I *love* listening to Canadians singing O Canada.  18,000 taking over and singing the last 2/3 or so all on their own.

Florida at Edmonton, game 6.  Here we go.

EDIT:  Wow...Edmonton gets 1 in the first, and a *quick* goal in the first 45 seconds of game 2.  Florida apparently responds 10 seconds later (!)......but the Oilers call for a replay, and it's *overturned* because the play was offsides.  BARELY.  (Hockey's got a nice rule.  Challenge a play, if you don't win the challenge...delay of game penalty.)

Edmonton gets another later to go up 3-0.  Panthers get 1, but get desperate, down 2, around the 5 minute mark......and the Oilers make them pay with 2 empty net goals.

5-1.

Game 7, here we come.  First time a series has gone from 3-0 to game 7 in 80 years.

The last 2 games in Edmonton...13-2 Oilers.

It's a tradition on home opening matches of the Portland Timbers (Major League Soccer) that the massive supporters group The Timbers Army sings the anthem.

After the first home opener in 2011, A Boston sportswriter on the ESPN series Around the Horn told his audience that 4,000 anthem singers in full throat having a go at it at once was an insult to the anthem and the flag. I don't know how much he covered soccer, where organized supporters groups singing various songs and chants through much of the match is a global norm. And fans in every sport are encouraged to sing along with the anthem.

Getting back to the Canadians, they must have complicated thoughts about "The4 Star-Spangled Banner", which was written near the end of the War of 1812. That war was started by the Americans on a flimsy pretext, and its purpose was to conquer Canada and add it to the Union while the British was occupied with Napoleon. The Canadians would not have it, and they soundly repelled the invasion with British aid.

"The Star-Spangled Banner" is a really weird choice for a national song, IMHO. There are many that better exemplify what Americans are actually on about all the time.

Man...from AP:

Quote

Texas parted ways with baseball coach David Pierce on Monday after eight seasons in which the Longhorns won the Big 12 three times but made only three appearances in the College World Series.

Win your conference 3 times...make what amounts to the Elite Eight 3 times...and that's not good enough?  Wow.

That said,

a)  they had a somewhat down year.

b)  They're moving to the SEC in baseball too.  If you think SEC football is a powerhouse, it don't hold a CANDLE to baseball.  4 teams in the CWS this year...2 of which play tonight for the title, and a 3rd made it to the bracket final, to play into the title series.  (The CWS was 4 SEC and 4 ACC teams this year.)  Oh, and this will be the 6th baseball title in  the last 7 for the SEC.  By 6 different universities.

My oh my oh my...

Florida Panthers had a good, LONG look at the Abyss of Despair, blowing a 3-0 lead...

But in the kind of drama that ONLY hockey can create, they pull off a 2-1 win, holding off a desperate last 5 minute all-out effort to get the tying goal by the Oilers...but some near-miraculous goaltending and generally rugged defense keep the lead intact.

Panthers win the Stanley Cup in a series that'll go down in hockey history.

EDIT:  NOT popular.  McDavid wins the Conn Smythe as overall playoff MVP...broke a record held by Gretzky so it's understandable, but......he lost.  And I'm quite sure he'd give it up for a chance to hold the only trophy that matters.  Side note, I'm watching Bettman announce the Smythe, and now making his little speech to give the Cup to the Panthers captain first of all.  OK, nothing there...but Bettman's got some...really *twitchy* head movements going one while he's doing it.  Disturbing, if it isn't a long-term habit while speaking....

It should be noted that this team's only competed in the Tour a handful of times.  It actually got promoted from the Pro Tour to the World Tour last year.  It did get some wild card entries into the Tour in the past, but ya gotta think a wild card entry is going to have a seriously hard time winning a Grand Tour stage.

But it's cool they got this one.

One interesting point in the article...Pogacar decided against going for the stage win.  Chasing down the breakaway wasn't worth it, he noted.......because of the heat.  I don't follow European weather much, but I have heard it's been a scorcher there too...so this is concerning.  This was a hilly stage...no serious climbs, but 6 of them.  Monday's route is flatter.  I don't even wanna think what the mountain stages will be like.  I'll go out on a limb and suggest there will be more riders than usual that complete a stage within the time limit...but are so drained, they can't make the starting line the next day.

Indeed....................

From Cycling News.

Astana's Tour de France got off to a terrible start, with Mark Cavendish struggling off the back in the searing head of Tuscany on stage 1. As his team rallied around him, helping him through episodes of vomiting, Gazzoli was hit by apparent leg cramps and climbed off, not finishing the stage and missing the opportunity to race the Tour de France through his home region of Lombardy on stage 3.

Sir Mark Cavendish wins stage 5 of the Tour de France. This means he has now broken the record for stage wins at the Tour with 35. His team got on the front on the last climb and took him up to the line. He shot through a gap and got the win from other sprinters. Everyone was congratulating him which is something I cannot recall seeing before.

Dylan Groenewegen wins stage 6 of the Tour de France. Photo finish. The sprinters did not know who won so did not celebrate.

The finishing sprint starts at about the 4 minute mark.

Cav got the congratulations because he broke a major record.  As in:  Hinault approached it, but no one since has been anywhere *close*.  Kittel's the leader in the last 45 years...with 14.

I wouldn't be surprised if Cav drops out before the big southern mountains...the way the route's structured this year, as a counterclockwise loop ending in Nice, there's the Wine Country TT tomorrow, 2 more flats and a hilly stage, then there's a moderate mountain stage...only a single Cat 1 climb, quite a few secondary ones.  2 more flat stages.  Then...Pau.  2 HC climbs, including a summit finish.  I'll predict Cav doesn't finish this stage;  at this point, his team's got to be ecstatic with the stage win, he's got to be ecstatic with the stages record...what's left?  I just don't think he'll torture himself, because stages 14-20 are NASTY.

I'll also suggest Cav's set a mark *wildly* unlikely to be challenged for a very long time, and is almost certainly the GOAT among sprinters.
