unclevlad
The last major hurdle's been crossed at the Tour. All the leaders have started...no one tested positive. That's not empty, because 2 other riders did test positive and were pulled out.

Michael Hopcroft
Max Verstappen is having an incredible run in 2022, showing that at least this year he's the best driver in F1 and probably the world. Now if he could just stay on the track, his pace would be truly epic. He qualifies superbly and has a knack for holding onto the pole. If Lewis Hamilton is a surgeon on the track, Verstappen is the hammer smashing the walls. Their rivalry is fascinating. There will be a GP in Vegas later this year. Given the blisteringly-hot temperatures in Vegas in general (enough to make me think Las Vegas was a terrible place to build a city) with the scorching track temperatures in any F1 venue, the drivers are going to be roasting in their cockpits. I don't know what happens if an F1 driver passes out on the track, but I imagine it is no fun. The Vegas street circuit on the Strip is a temporary measure until an F1-compliant track can be constructed. Although the race will bring a great deal of money into the Vegas economy (not that it doesn't have enough already), casinos and other businesses on the Strip have expressed their fear they will lose much more business with the Strip being blocked off from pretty much all traffic, both motor and foot, for what would otherwise be a very profitable weekend. unclevlad
Apparently, Vegas started as a railroad stop between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles. The major impetus for its growth was the construction of Hoover Dam. Yeah, I suspect lots of people won't like the Vegas GP on the streets. With the last stage of the Tour right now, I've been thinking off and on, that really, this would be an awful day to be in Paris. The Bolder Boulder bike race ran at least one year I was there, and I remember how it made the Mall area a confused mess. Las Vegas Boulevard is *packed* most of the time, and they have to shut down the very busy cross-streets too, for a race. Yeah, it'd be a right mess, guv'na. death tribble
Jasper Philipsen wins stage 21 of the Tour de France. He becomes the only sprinter this year to win two stages. Van Aert did not contest the sprint staying with his team. Vingegaard is the overall winner, Van Aert wins the Green sprinters jersey and overall combativity, Vingegaard won the Mountains jersey by only as few points. Pogacar won the Young Rider classification and came second and Team Ineos won best team as they had most riders (3) in the General Classification. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cycling/62285420

The team competition is stage-by-stage; the team score for a stage is the combined time for its first 3 riders. The label of "GC rider" simply means "the rider the lackeys help" who is expected to place high. That's as opposed to domestiques, who are the lackeys who sacrifice their energy to keep the GC guys in good position. Yeah, J-V just put it into cruise control, finishing WELL back...almost a minute. Side by side finish, in 76th-80th. Safely in their own little pocket. EDIT: another aspect of the story. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/07/23/tour-de-france-heat-wave-climate-change/ Story mentions one rider was treated for heatstroke after one of the Alps stages; another one, on a Pyrenees stage, finished and was *seriously* overtaxed. He had medical people watching him; his breathing was hard and fast for too long. The people with him were clearly worried. I don't recall who it was, but I was thinking heat exhaustion with him. And heat-related issues are no joke; it's called heat *stroke* for a reason. Yes, it's absolutely life-threatening.

It did serve as a halfway point between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles, but it was a couple years ahead of the railroad, as I recall. And yes, it is a horrible place to build a city. I think the reason the Mormons were able to build there is that, like so many other places they settled, nobody else wanted it.

Actually, apparently the English Women's team was doing so against Spain in the early going quite a bit, including when Julie Fowdy was commenting that the player was holding the wrong ankle. Otherwise, I would have agreed with you. Also, having been watching the south american championships, there is a bit of this.
Pariah
As you may be aware, one of the coolest things about winning the Stanley Cup is that every member of the winning team gets one day with it. During their one day, the ayer or coach coach can take it pretty much anywhere they want and do pretty much anything they want with it. Avalanche defenseman Jack Johnson baptized his kids in the Stanley Cup

If you're gonna watch, it's Apple streaming or in person in the stadium, period. That's a real....er...bummer. Trying to watch my language these days I just dumped DTV a couple months ago and haven't even noticed it, except the $ I've saved. Right now I either go to the home games or watch on Amazon Prime video, they currently stream live games unless carried by something like ESPN. I really don't want another subscription. All, and I mean ALL of the services like Disney+, Paramount or HBO are simply not worth it because of decent content being so rare and spaced out. Pretty much all of my entertainment is movies and shows from outside the US. Apple does have a few shows I'd like to see, but they are not so important that I'd want to subscribe. Generally the 7 day free trial is more than enough to watch the entire catalog of decent shows. It has been true for all the streams I've tried. I have Amazon Prime because it is already there and Netflix because it has a good catalog of international fare and Kdrama. I guess older single people with a good amount of disposable income is no longer their target audience.
Cancer
It's maximum monetization, that's all. I have lived as a cheap bass tarred and I will die a cheap bass tarred, so it'll be sayonara for me. AFAICT there's no such deal for Liga MX yet, so hopefully there'll still be Mexican soccer most weekends on TUDN via rabbit ears.
