What is "The greatest game show host of all time"?

I thought this would be about who the forum thought was the best gameshow host.

I first came across Mr Trebek through The X-Files where he teamed with Jesse Ventura as Men in Black in the wonderful Jose Chung's From Outer Space.

Here is the BBC obituary article

Did he ever get to do it, because that would have been on a par with Jim Valvano's and Stuart Scott's speeches at the ESPYs.

I do not believe so.

His last shows were taped just before Halloween, IIRC...I'm thinking they might not tape during the week of election day because it might be a bit of a mess.  Anyway, they usually taped 5 shows in a row, on the same day;  it was mentioned they didn't.  3 that day, the last 2 the next day.  Seems like he wasn't doing well.

But nothing else was said, that I can recall.  Maybe a hint before the taping on that first day, but nothing after that.

For those who don't know but care to know:  the last taped episode will be aired Christmas Day.  And as of right now, no, his replacement has not been picked.

I've heard reports that his final match will air right before Christmas in most markets. It will be a bittersweet experience to see it.

The producers of the show recently announced that they will have a series of interim/guest hosts until a permanent replacement is chosen.

It's not entirely surprising that the first of these will be Ken Jennings.

Yeah, I saw that too.  Jennings is the natural transition figure to honor the history and tradition of the show.  Whether he's the best choice long-term, well, we'll have to see.  I expect Brad Rutter will host for a bit too.  He has the media experience and historical significance.  After that, who knows.  Pat Sajak is plausible for a short run, as a personal tribute.

Update on final shows:  plan is now to air "10 of his best episodes" in the 21 and 28 December weeks, then his final week starting January 4th.
