Blue
I'm a huge Chris Cornell fan. That dude had such range. For me it is between him and Freddie Mercury and I'm sure Chris would be honored to be mentioned in the same conversation.

Killer Shrike
pretty sure that's Freddy Mercury and Roy Orbison Pariah
Matt the Bruins
I'd definitely take Orbison over Mercury. I think I'd give the crown to Ann Wilson. My runners-up would include Aretha, Bowie, Pat Benatar, Elton John, Smokey Robinson, Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, Barry Gibb, and Linda Ronstadt. But they're all such different talents it's really difficult to rank them.

Starlord
I definitely wouldn't attach Aretha Franklin, Smokey Robinson, Barry Gibb, Linda Ronstadt, and Karen Carpenter to 'rock'. To me, those are more R&B and pop.

unclevlad
When you get to these kinds of rankings, it's sometimes hard to separate the singer from the band, and/or from the style. For emoting, Roy Orbison. Huge bonus points for clarity and smoothness. Honorable mention to Eddie Vedder, even if his emotion is generally rather negative. For flair, Freddy. If ya wanna argue James Brown...perhaps, but I prefer Freddy's style, as well as the style of the period. Among the power singers, I'd have to go with Steve Perry. Edit: for breadth, power, style...Bono. LOVE Edge's guitar work but Bono's the one that caught me first...which is backwards from, say, Van Halen, where it's Eddie's guitar.
