Ninja-Bear
@Ragitsu hopefully I can express what I mean. There is this idea in the OSR that the Player should figure out stuff not the character. You’ll hear the phrase “the answer isn’t on your sheet”. Well that may be fine for some people however I roleplay so I can play characters who aren’t me. The character in any given game world knows more about it than me the player. Do you know the difference between Hay and Straw for example (my mom does) I do not however it’s a safe bet that a character that was raised on a farm would know it or even a knight might because he tends to feed his horse. It took me over a decade to realize why I was terrible at Conversation in game. It turns out that I don’t really understand the subtle conversational clues when a GM plays an NPC. I tend to watch facial expressions or body language, which is usually absent since the GM is juggling NPC motivation, honesty, and style as well as the game rules and keeping all the players engaged. I have learned to ask the GM to let me roll first and then play out the verbal interactions. Most GM’s say “No” but others embrace the idea. It wasn’t me but no one will ever forget the player who fumbled their High Society roll and said, “I take a vase off the table and say ‘Oh, my. Devilishly clever. Having chamber pots all around.’ Then I .. tinkle in it.” None of the party was ever allowed back in Jamaica. But it was worth it. Ninja-Bear
@DentArthurDent, my first real GM (and I’ve said this before) was gracious. No matter how I fumbled a soliloquy, he’d grant a bonus to the roll. And that encouraged me to keep trying to roleplay. Cygnia

Ragitsu
I found the following while plundering AD&D 2e material for low-level challenges -> Spoiler Very Robin of Locksley versus Little John. One question, though: absent any proffered payment, could demanding a good fight (albeit a non-lethal one where winning doesn't matter and any resultant injuries are healed) be considered fair Neutral Good behavior? tkdguy
tkdguy
One good thing about setting your campaign in the real world (or a fantasy version of it) is that you can incorporate myths and legends in your lore. I have decided that the tales of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table were true, and the Quest for the Holy Grail actually happened. Sir Galahad was eventually canonized by the Catholic Church. Good idea: Creating the Order of the Sangreal (Holy Grail) with Galahad as its patron saint. Bad idea: Having the motto be "Blue. No... YELLOOOOOOW!!!" DentArthurDent and L. Marcus 1

Ragitsu
Nowhere is the phrase "Always arms at hand." more relevant than when a player is slinging d4s. Burning hands and crippled feet. Edited Friday at 02:04 AM by Ragitsu
